The Hidden Dangers in Skincare Products
When it comes to skincare, most of us assume what we’re using is safe. But the reality is, many products lining store shelves contain ingredients that may be harmful to your long-term health. Some have even been linked to cancer.
At Serene Infusions, we believe everyone deserves to know what they’re putting on their skin. That’s why we want to shine a light on common toxic chemicals found in many conventional beauty products—and help you make safer choices.
Top Cancer-Linked Chemicals to Avoid in Skincare
1. ParabensUsed as preservatives, parabens (like methylparaben or propylparaben) extend shelf life but may disrupt hormone function by mimicking estrogen. Studies have found parabens in breast tissue, raising concerns about a possible link to breast cancer.
2. Phthalates Commonly found in products listed with "fragrance," phthalates help scent linger but have been linked to hormone disruption, developmental issues, and cancer risk.
3. Formaldehyde & Formaldehyde-Releasing PreservativesUsed to prevent bacteria in water-based products, formaldehyde is a known carcinogen. Watch for ingredients like DMDM hydantoin and quaternium-15—both slowly release formaldehyde.
4. PEGs (Polyethylene Glycols)These petroleum-based ingredients often contain a contaminant called 1,4-dioxane, a probable human carcinogen. PEGs are used to soften or thicken products.
5. Synthetic Fragrance (a.k.a. “Parfum”)“Fragrance” can legally hide dozens of undisclosed chemicals, many of which may irritate the skin or impact hormone health. Avoid products that don’t clearly list scent ingredients.
Why This Matters
Our skin absorbs what we apply to it, and that includes the good and the harmful. With daily use, exposure to these questionable ingredients can accumulate over time, potentially increasing the risk of long-term health concerns—including cancer.
How to Choose Safer Skincare
Read ingredient labels. If you can’t pronounce it or don’t recognize it, research it.
Look for natural alternatives. Choose skincare that uses botanical, food-grade, or farm-grown ingredients.
Avoid “fragrance.” Opt for products scented only with essential oils or that are fragrance-free.
Support brands with transparency. Trust companies that share their ingredient sourcing and manufacturing practices.
Why Serene Infusions Is a Safer Choice
At Serene Infusions, our products are born out of necessity. After a disabling injury and chronic condition that triggered severe migraines, I began creating skincare formulas that wouldn’t cause irritation or flare-ups. That meant no parabens, no phthalates, and no synthetic fragrances—just clean, gentle, effective ingredients I grow or harvest myself, like hemp, honey, hibiscus, and garden herbs.
Every batch is handmade with intention, because we believe self-care should support your health—not risk it.
